Scribbling and painting are one of the earliest forms of self expression that precedes language. Young children communicate by making their thinking and imagination visible through painting. They make sense of the world by expressing ideas, feelings and construct knowledge in the process. They may not be able to attach words or meaning to their painting, but they make their thinking visible through it.
